Unfold

by DRIFT

Unfold is a tech-heavy, immersive, and interactive public art installation created by the famous Dutch multidisciplinary art studio DRIFT (founded by artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta)

The artwork uses biometric sensors, projection mapping, and generative AI. When a visitor interacts with the installation (by sitting on a wooden chair and touching a biometric sensor), the system captures their real-time heartbeat and pulse (BPM).
Using custom algorithms and AI, the system instantly translates the participant's unique biological rhythm into a personalized, digital "floral bloom" and audio score projected across the space. Drawing inspiration from local botanical life, a closed digital blossom on the ceiling slowly grows, opens, and shifts colors in perfect synchronization with the visitor's pulse. It acts as a live, visual portrait of a person's exact state of being at that precise moment.
The installation explores the symbiotic relationship between technology, human physiology, and nature. It creates an infinite variety of visual patterns, allowing individuals to physically witness their own biological energy blending into a shared, living environment of light and sound.
